GP - 2009

MCC Summer Grand Prix 2009

The final results are in. See the table below.

The Summer Grand Prix series consists of four individual tournaments:

  • Summer GP I - July 2 - Benko gambit 1 d4 Nf6 2 c4 c5 3 d5 b5
  • Summer GP II - July 23 - Grunfeld (D80) 1 d4 Nf6 2 c4 g6 3 Nc3 d5
  • Summer GP III - Aug 6 - King's gambit accepted 1 e4 e5 2 f4 exf4 3 Nf3
  • Summer GP IV - Aug 13 - Ruy Lopez, Bird defense (C61) 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 Bb5 Nd4

These are all free, unrated events open to all. The time control is game in twenty minutes per head (G/20) and we play four rounds per night. There is a special twist to these GP events: they are thematic tournaments. What does that mean? It means the opening moves of all games are prescribed. Playing in thematic tournaments is a fun way to acquaint yourself with new openings and so broaden your horizon for more 'serious' tournament play.

At the end of this series, the player who has gathered the most GP points will receive a special prize. Grand Prix points are gathered according to the system described below. This scoring system includes a weighting system that handicaps the stronger players. Hopefully that will keep the competition tense throughout all four events.

GP scoring system

Placement no.1-6: 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, and 2 points (points added and split for shared places)
Participation: 2 points per event
Last event: Grand Prix points (for places 1-6) are doubled for the last event (August 13)
GP point weights: Final GP score is found by multiplying point total by 1,000 and dividing by the USCF rating (August supplement). Unrated players will be assigned a tentative rating of 1,000

Summer GP II - July 23

Grunfeld defense. 1 d4 Nf6 2 c4 g6 3 Nc3 d5

Related to the Benko gambit, but with different hypermodern ideas, we tried the Grunfeld defense.
