MCC Summer Grand Prix 2006

The Summer Grand Prix series consists of four individual tournaments:

These are all free, unrated events open to all. The time control is game in twenty minutes per head (G/20) and we play four rounds per night. There is a special twist to these GP events: they are thematic tournaments. What does that mean? It means the opening moves of all games are prescribed. Playing in thematic tournaments is a fun way to acquaint yourself with new openings and so broaden your horizon for more 'serious' tournament play.

At the end of this series, the player who has gathered the most GP points will receive a special book prize (valued ~$15-20). Grand Prix points are gathered according to the system described below. This scoring system includes a weighting system that handicaps the stronger players. Hopefully that will keep the competition tense throughout all four events.

GP scoring system

Placement no.1-6: 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, and 2 points (points added and split for shared places)
Participation: 2 points per event
Last event: Grand Prix points (for places 1-6) are doubled for the last event (August 4)
GP point weights: Final GP score is found by multiplying point total by 1,000 and dividing by the USCF rating (August supplement). Unrated players will be assigned a tentative rating of 1,000.

Summer GP I - July 6

Scandinavian 1.e4,d5

The Scandinavian, or Center-Counter as it is also known, is a rare guest at the very highest level but remains a favorite among many club players. A rare exception was the 1995 world championship match between Kasparov and Vishy Anand (played in New York). Also Bent Larsen used this opening to beat Karpov in 1979 when the Russian was at the height of his powers. Here are two game scores for inspiraion:

Summer GP II - July 13

Orangutang 1.b4

First of all: how on earth did an opening end up being named for a great ape? It was dubbed so by Tartakower, who dedicated a game (against Maroczy) at New York 2924 tournament to a female orangutan (named Susan) that he had seen during a visit to the Bronx Zoo. The opening is very tactical with typical white targets being the f6 and g7 squares. There are so many ways for black to counter the (to some people) rather insulting thrust of the b-pawn, which makes it difficult to pick typical games.
